Adzite quarry (1st of 2)

Adzite quarry

This quarry site is on D’Urville Island where a rock type called adzite (baked argillite) was quarried and trimmed for adzes by Māori. Transformed by heat and fluid, this rock is excellent for making cutting tools, retaining a sharp edge. Samples from this locality and nearby were traded and have been found all over New Zealand.
