Whaling stations

Shore whaling stations featured on the Marlborough coast from the late 1820s into the 1840s and in a few instances for longer periods. The stations were set up to exploit the right whale, which migrated through Cook Strait. Click on the small pictures to see images from whaling stations at Kaikōura, Kākāpō Bay on Port Underwood, and Tory Channel.
