Story: Marlborough region
In June 2003 the Court of Appeal ruled that Māori residents in the Marlborough Sounds with traditional links to the district had certain rights to the foreshore and seabed. In this television report Kathy Ertel, a lawyer for Picton-based iwi Te Āti Awa, suggests that as a result many Māori groups elsewhere in the country would bring foreshore and seabed-related claims before the courts. However, the government quickly passed legislation which defined the foreshore as Crown-owned property with public access.
