Sand has been dredged from the sea floor off Pākiri Beach, north of Auckland, since the 1950s. The sand is used in Auckland’s building industry. In 2005, two dredging companies wanted to continue taking around 80,000 cubic metres of sand from the beach every year for the next 20 years. In April that year the Auckland Regional Council recommended that sand dredging cease, because of concerns that sand extraction had increased beach erosion.
