Marine reserves

This school of tarakihi was photographed off Kapiti Island. The sea between the mainland and the island is a marine reserve, as is a smaller area off Kapiti’s north-western shore. When a reserve was first proposed in the early 1990s, many recreational anglers were opposed to the idea. But by 2005 anglers in areas adjacent to the reserve and divers were benefitting from the stocks of fish.
