Story: Oil and gas

Sedimentary basins

Sedimentary basins

This map shows the location of New Zealand’s sedimentary basins. It is in these areas that oil and gas are likely to be found. While oil and gas have been found in other basins, Taranaki is the only one yielding commercial quantities. It remains the primary focus of oil and gas exploration.
