Story: Te Ara – a history

Map of New Zealand with iwi

Map of New Zealand with iwi

The iwi marked on this map represent those with stories in the first theme of Te Ara, which was launched in February 2005. The tribes were chosen on the basis of size and influence, and in some cases smaller iwi were grouped together in  entries such as 'Ngā iwi o Whanganui', 'Ngā iwi o Tūranganui-a-Kiwa' and 'Ngā iwi o Whāngārei'. In nearly all cases the authors were members of the iwi concerned.
