Story: Māori overseas
In this depiction of Sydney by Major Taylor (engraved by R. Havell & Son), cloaked Māori chiefs stand in the garden of a stone villa. Māori were quick to trade with early European vessels, and chiefs sailed for Sydney to broker deals for goods that were rare in New Zealand. Muskets were particularly sought after, as they afforded a huge advantage over tribal enemies back home.
