Story: Manufacturing – an overview
In 1867 manufacturing was spread through New Zealand’s provinces. Auckland remained the dominant industrial area, with the most manufacturers (102), the most employees (1,041), the most horsepower used (1,165 – around 900 kilowatts), and the most capital invested (£246,400 – around $25 million in 2009 terms). It would shortly be overtaken by Dunedin, its manufacturing lifted by the gold rush.
