Story: Logging native forests
The Maruia Declaration of 1977, which attracted 341,159 signatures, is delivered to Parliament Buildings. The declaration outlined six principles for the protection of New Zealand’s forests. The first, ‘Native forests, wherever they remain, need recognition and protection in law’, became a rallying cry for conservationists during the 1970s and 1980s.
