During the 1920s there was a widespread belief in New Zealand that plenty of sunlight was good for health. At health camps such as Turakina, north of Wellington, children were encouraged to lie fully exposed to the sun. These boys are wearing sun hats, but the dangers of sunburn and skin cancer from the high levels of ultraviolet light were not yet known.
