This depiction of the Pink Terrace was painted by the artist Charles Blomfield in 1890. The terraces were a major tourist attraction in the Rotorua area, but were obliterated by the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Their colour was probably due to the presence of a pigmented thermophilic bacterium such as Thermus ruber.
