Waimakariri River

The Canterbury Plains are made of gravels from the Southern Alps, carried down to the sea by large rivers. This is the lower reaches of the Waimakariri River north of Christchurch. Like other Canterbury rivers, it has a braided pattern of multiple channels and gravel, in contrast to the single channel of a meandering river.
