The central part of the South Island is dominated by the Southern Alps. Major rivers flow eastwards, forming the Canterbury plains. This map shows the location of places mentioned in the text. The Alpine Fault forms a clear natural boundary on the western side of the mountains, and shows up clearly on the map.
