Coastal lakes, Chatham Island

Chatham Island consists of several low, rocky islands, joined by sandspits that surround lakes and lagoons. They include Lakes Mainui (foreground), Kairae and Taia on the island’s eastern side, with Te Whanga lagoon in the distance. They are separated from the open sea by only a narrow strip of sand.
