The Shotover River in west Otago flows through a steep, rocky gorge, the site of a spectacular jet-boat ride for tourists. Near the mouth of Pleasant Creek, river gravels filled an ancient channel, but have been largely sluiced away by gold miners. The gravels are much softer than the schist rock through which the river flows.
