Story: Land birds – overview
The extinct Haast’s eagle preyed on large birds such as this medium-sized moa – the shape and size of its beak matches damage inflicted on moa bones found in swamps. When attacking a moa, an eagle would have clung to it with its huge talons. This reconstruction is on display at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington.
