Martial arts teacher Lee Jung Nam

Martial arts teacher Lee Jung Nam

John Lee, also known as Grandmaster Lee Jung Nam, helped introduce the martial arts of tae kwon do and hapkido to New Zealand. He arrived in Wellington in 1975 and began teaching at the YMCA before passing on his skills to the police, the army and women’s groups. He moved to Auckland in 1991 to promote martial arts to a larger audience. John Lee is especially supportive of golf, another sport keenly practised by Koreans in New Zealand. He is shown here with young Korean golf players.
