When Frances Hodgkins, one of New Zealand’s most significant artists, left New Zealand in 1901 she was following the example of many of her contemporaries, such as Dorothy Richmond, A. H. O'Keeffe, Margaret Stoddart and Grace Joel. As a small colony, New Zealand could only offer so much to the talented and ambitious. Many artists, literati and academics went to Europe. This work, 'The Spanish well, Purbeck', was painted in 1945, while she was living in Dorset, England.
