A tribute to colonial service
Many Kiwis have served in the island territories of the Pacific that were once administered by New Zealand. Pictured here (from left) are various colonial bureaucrats – J. H. McEwen, A. O. Dare, Leslie Rex, John Mathison, Mrs Mathison and J. S. Whitta – at Alofi South village, Niue, in 1958. They are standing outside ‘Macdare’, a community centre built by Niueans in honour of past and present commissioners.
