Story: Kiwi

Distribution of kiwi populations, 2006

Before people arrived, New Zealand was a land of trees and kiwi numbered in their millions. At least one species, the eastern kiwi, is now extinct, and the other five species remain only in isolated patches. There are fewer than 500 Haast tokoeka (a variety of the southern tokoeka) and about 250 rowi living at Ōkarito. The little spotted kiwi survives only on offshore islands.
