Story: Kauri forest
A dam near Piha, west of Auckland, is tripped, releasing the mass of kauri logs behind it. In remote areas, timber dams were built on streams, taking advantage of natural floods for moving felled trees out of the bush. Thousands of logs could be sent downstream when a dam or network of dams was tripped.
