Eva Rickard

Land campaigner Eva Rickard dances during a land protest at Pākaitore, in Wanganui in 1995. Eva Rickard was a kaitiaki (guardian) of her people’s land, and led a campaign in the late 1970s against the loss of tribal land at Raglan. The land was taken by the government for war purposes during the Second World War, but was not returned when the war finished. Instead, it was turned into a golf course. The area was eventually returned to the Tainui Awhiro people.
