Story: Irrigation and drainage
Waterlogged soil is a result of high annual rainfall of the area, the amount of runoff from nearby hills or mountains, and soil properties that cause water to accumulate. Many of the coastal regions of New Zealand need drainage because they collect water from inland regions. Those that do not are the gravelly soils of Canterbury and Marlborough, and the pumice soils of the central North Island.
