Percentage decrease of population in Ireland’s counties, 1841–51

Throughout the 19th century millions of Irish left their homeland for new worlds. The outflow increased dramatically in the years after the potato famine of the late 1840s. This map shows the percentage decrease of population in Ireland's counties between 1841 and 1851. Very few refugees from the famine left directly for New Zealand; most went to the United States or Canada.
