Argument still rages over whether Morris Yock or John Cowie deserves credit for inventing the jandal. Cowie’s daughter Mary Deken, seen here modelling a pair at her home in Ōakura, Taranaki, is in no doubt that her father introduced the famous footwear from Japan in the 1940s. National Jandal Day is held every year to raise money for Surf Life Saving New Zealand.
