Tīwai smelter, Bluff, Southland

The biggest Japanese investment in New Zealand was in the aluminium smelter at Tīwai Point opposite the port of Bluff, in Southland. Drawn by the availability of cheap electricity and land, the smelter turned Queensland bauxite into aluminum, for which Japan is the principal market.
