Katikati murals

Katikati in the Bay of Plenty is known as the mural town of New Zealand. In 1990 some residents, concerned about the dismal economic situation, formed a group to organise mural paintings to revitalise the town. Some had travelled to the Canadian town of Chemainus and were impressed by its murals and high visitor numbers. Katikati's first murals were painted in 1991, and by 2014 there were more than 30.
