Porirua railway station was upgraded between 2010 and 2011, and the Porirua City Council installed a series of murals was throughout the station. Before the improvements the station was regularly tagged, so the murals were intended to transform its appearance and deter graffiti. Porirua artist Tupe Rodgers contributed a mural based on the tradition of Polynesian explorer Kupe and the giant wheke (octopus).
