This chart shows British monarchs (in bold) and royal visits to New Zealand up to 2011. First on the list is George III, in whose name Lieutenant James Cook claimed New Zealand. Britain did not exercise sovereignty over New Zealand before 1840, and the first royal visit did not take place until 1869. The most frequent royal visitor has been the Duke of Edinburgh, who visited New Zealand 15 times. Royal visits often include work for organisations with which the visitor is associated, such as Riding for the Disabled or the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
