Story: Men’s clubs

Map of gentlemen's clubs

This map shows the locations and dates of establishment of all the clubs founded in the 19th century, except the very short-lived New Plymouth club. Click on each location to see an image of the club, or an extract from a newspaper article about it. Gentlemen's clubs were an urban phenomenon, springing up in the main centres and the larger provincial towns.
