Greek women arrive in Wellington, 1962

A 1946 parliamentary select committee recommended that New Zealand should increase its population. It was accepted that if not enough people from Britain could be persuaded to come, people from Scandinavia, Northern Europe and even Southern Europe should be given permits to settle. These young Greek women were brought out in the 1960s to work as domestic servants in hotels, hospitals and other institutions.
