‘The death of Marion du Fresne’

‘The death of Marion du Fresne’

This painting depicts the scene of the French explorer Marc Joseph Marion du Fresne’s demise at Manawaora Bay in Northland, in 1772. Artists in Europe often indulged in romantic interpretations of the South Seas. The columns of the storehouse on the right are more Roman than Māori.
