Theories of Māori origins
In the late 1800s and early 1900s various theories had Māori originating in South America, North America, India, Greece, Egypt and Israel, among other places. The arrow shows the actual origin of the Māori people’s Polynesian ancestors – around Taiwan. It also shows their migration through South-East Asia, Melanesia and into the Pacific.
