Hydrothermal eruption at Reporoa, 2005

An unexpected hydrothermal eruption on 19 April 2005 left a 50-metre-wide crater in a scenic reserve at Reporoa, accompanied by a huge cloud of steam. Farmer Phil Morgan was spraying weeds when the cloud erupted:

‘The cows saw it first, and bolted and stampeded up the paddock. I wondered what was up, then saw it myself.’ He was covered in fine ash. He could feel the ground still rumbling when he went to have a closer look in the afternoon. ‘I felt safe, but didn’t go too close. It was still bubbling.’
