Jack Hobbs of the Auckland Regional Botanical Gardens shows the hebe cultivars ‘Wiri Splash’ and ‘Wiri Gem’ from his breeding programme. He produced 17 cultivars between 1982 and the late 1990s, and gave them all names starting with ‘Wiri’. They were selected because they have attractive flowers and thrive in Auckland’s warm, temperate conditions.
Jack Hobbs also bred the ‘Wiri’ mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium) cultivars during the 1990s.
