Archives New Zealand is the official guardian of
New Zealand’s heritage documents, with a particular
responsibility for preserving government records.
In addition to information about holdings, research
procedures and finding aids at National Archives,
the site contains current and past online
exhibitions on New Zealand history topics and gives
access to the National Register of Archives and
Manuscripts.

The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography site
contains the biographies of over 3,000 New
Zealanders who made their mark some time between
1769 and 1960, and ‘Our Land, Our People’,
exhibitions on New Zealand history topics.

The National Library is responsible for
collecting, maintaining and making available
literature and other resources about New Zealand
and the Pacific. As well providing catalogues for
the library’s print, manuscript and digital
collections, and a number of databases, this site
gives access to digital images and objects (e.g.
Timeframes, Te Waimano, Papers Past and the
Ranfurly Collection) and to online exhibitions
relating to New Zealand history.

The New Zealand Archaeological Association
promotes research into the archaeology of New
Zealand and maintains a national site recording
scheme. This site contains information about the
association’s activities, a little information
about pre-European Māori settlement, information
and images of archaeological sites, teacher
resources, and other feature articles.

This site, which promotes New Zealand as an
international tourism destination, has brief
information about New Zealand people, history,
culture, society and environment, together with key
facts about the country.

The New Zealand Electronic Text Centre hosts an
expanding archive of digital texts and images. Its
collections include the official history of New
Zealand in the Second World War, selected letters
of historian J. C. Beaglehole, and the print
history project: historical texts and images from
various archives.

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust was
established in 1954 to promote the identification
and protection of New Zealand places of historical
significance. As well as feature articles on the
work of the Trust, this site gives access to
selected articles from the Trust’s quarterly
magazine, Heritage New Zealand, and the Register of
Historic Places.

NZHistory.net.nz is produced by the Ministry for
Culture and Heritage and provides information and
exhibitions on New Zealand history. The site
contains an extensive gallery of historical
exhibitions on contact and post-European settlement
topics, and links to many other New Zealand history
sites.

contains copies of the Treaty text, a timeline, a
history of the Treaty and links.
