In the early 1870s several thousand settlers were brought out from Scandinavia by the New Zealand government. A number of Norwegians settled at Norsewood in southern Hawke’s Bay, including Olaf and Petria (née Pedersen) Thoresen. This photograph shows Petria (seated, second from left) with their children in the early 20th century.
