Young woman gathering fuel

Between 1840 and 1852 almost 20,000 people came from Britain and Ireland to settle in New Zealand. Many came from rural areas, pushed by declining wages and the grind of poverty and hard physical labour. In this slightly romantic watercolour a woman gathers fuel to heat the stove and warm the family cottage.
