Kororāreka, April 1840

As more whaling ships stopped for rest and recuperation in the Bay of Islands, a growing number of traders and grog-sellers set up business to cater to the visitors. This 1846 lithograph, ‘Mouillage de Korora-reka (Baie des Iles)’, was based on a watercolour painted by the surgeon on the French corvette Astrolabe. It shows the extent of shipping traffic and onshore housing at Kororāreka (Russell) by 1840.
