Melbourne, 1880

Melbourne, 1880

During the 1880s New Zealand suffered an economic depression and lost large numbers of people to Australia. Many went to Victoria, where the city of Melbourne continued to experience a boom as a result of gold production. This photo looks eastward along Bourke St towards the Parliament buildings, which were in the course of construction.
