Nankeen night heron
Nankeen night herons have had an elusive presence in New Zealand, but were known to breed along the Whanganui River in the 1990s. They are more compact and lack the long neck of other herons. They are active mainly at night, feeding at the edges of swamps among reeds or other cover. This drawing of a juvenile is from a series by Raymond Ching.
