Story: Hawke’s Bay region

Napier Hospital, 1969

Napier Hospital, 1969

The Napier suburb of Hospital Hill is so named for Napier Hospital, which opened in 1880. The Napier Hospital complex closed in 1998 when the region’s main hospital services were concentrated in Hastings. The buildings (the tall structure at right in this photograph) were still empty in 2009. The government agreed to sell the complex (seen as prime real estate) to a Napier developer in 2006. This agreement fell over during a world-wide financial crisis three years later.
