Story: Hawke’s Bay region

Farm forestry

Farm forestry

Some Hawke’s Bay farmers have diversified into commercial pine plantations. In 2008 the region contained 131,800 hectares of plantation forest. Plantation owners tended to be either large overseas companies or small owners (often local farmers) with small holdings. Most forests were located in the Wairoa and Hastings districts. This pine plantation is on a farm near Pūtere in northern Hawke’s Bay.
