Story: Hawke’s Bay region
Pastoral farming remained a key sector of the Hawke's Bay economy in the 2000s. Sheep and beef farming and meat manufacturing are still some of the largest employers. Some farmers have diversified their farming operations. Māngārara station, near Elsthorpe in Central Hawke's Bay, is still farmed with sheep and beef cattle but has formed a partnership with Air New Zealand, through the Air New Zealand Environment Trust, which was established in 2008. A 40-hectare gully on the farm was planted in native trees and a variety of tree species were planted around the rest of the farm to provide shade, shelter and fodder for livestock, and to provide carbon sinks.
