Feeding a chick
The main food fed to red-billed gull chicks is krill, but the amount available varies from year to year. When food is scarce most of the chicks do not survive. Parents have to choose between taking turns to guard the chick from predators (including neighbouring black-backed gulls), and both going to sea to find food.
