Until 1996, voting in New Zealand was a simple matter of putting a tick against the name of one candidate in single-member constituencies. After the change to mixed member proportional representation, voters had to get used to casting both a constituency and a party vote. For the first elections under MMP, the Electoral Commission mounted publicity campaigns about how the new system worked.
