Scott Base, Antarctica
New Zealand and the southern tip of South America are the largest land masses close to Antarctica. New Zealand has been a stop-off point for Antarctic exploration and research, from the ‘heroic age’ of Shackleton and Scott to America’s Operation Deep Freeze, which started in the 1950s. New Zealand’s Scott Base, a scientific station, is in the Ross Dependency, which is part of New Zealand but administered under the provisions of the Antarctic Treaty.
