Story: Government and agriculture
The New Zealand government introduced meat inspection in 1900 to improve the quality and competitiveness of the country’s exports in the UK market. Each carcass was checked at the freezing works and was given this label before being frozen. Meat inspectors were government employees, and therefore independent of meat companies.
