The Journal of Agriculture was published by the Department of Agriculture to educate farmers. The contents of the first issue illustrates the diversity of farming at the time – it included articles on the organisation and scope of the department, a criticism of tussock burning, a description of the poor condition of tussock grasslands in parts of the South Island, and an analysis of the British market and current product prices.
